Sam and I finally made it to the beach with our Extreme Motus beach wheelchair! Living in Utah, we usually use the all terrain wheelchair for hiking—mountain trails, red rock adventures, and desert landscapes are more our style. But since many of our customers use their Motus as a beach wheelchair, we wanted to experience it for ourselves. So we packed up, headed to Cocoa Beach, and set out to see how it would handle the sand, surf, and saltwater—and to learn firsthand what kind of maintenance is needed after rolling through the ocean.
Meeting Parks & Rec Professionals in Florida
The Extreme Motus team traveled to Florida for the NRPA (National Recreation and Park Association) Conference. As exhibitors, we had the chance to meet dozens of parks and recreation professionals from across the country—people passionate about making outdoor spaces more inclusive and accessible. Many stopped by our booth to check out the Motus all-terrain wheelchair and learn how it can help their communities open more trails, beaches, and parks to everyone.

Choosing the Beach Over Roller Coasters
Conferences like NRPA always have plenty of after-hours fun—networking events, parties, and special activities for exhibitors. One night, they even gave us free tickets to Universal Studios, with exclusive access to the park after hours. Fewer crowds, shorter lines—it sounded amazing.
But there was just one problem: we were only an hour from the beach, and Sam had never been. So instead of roller coasters, we traded our tickets for waves and salty air. We gave the passes away and hit the road toward Cocoa Beach. It was time to turn the Extreme Motus all terrain wheelchair into a beach wheelchair!

From Rainstorm to Waves
When we finally reached the coast, it was pouring rain—Florida-style. We waited it out in the van, hoping the clouds would pass. Eventually, the storm eased up, and we made our way to the shoreline.
The plan was simple: just dip our feet in the water. But like most beach trips, that plan didn’t last long. One big wave hit, soaking us completely, and after that… all bets were off.
We hadn’t brought swimsuits, towels, or even a change of clothes. None of that mattered. There we were—four Extreme Motus team members—jumping, laughing, and splashing in the waves without a care in the world. The ocean didn’t just soak our clothes; it washed away the stress of the week.

Laughing in the Waves
Before long, the four of us were waist-deep in the ocean, waves crashing over us again and again. Every time one hit, we laughed harder. Sam was bobbing up and down in the surf, completely caught up in the moment.
He was laughing so hard I’m not sure how much of the ocean he actually saw—his eyes were squeezed shut most of the time as the waves broke over us. But the joy on his face said it all.

Cleaning Up the Beach Wheelchair After the Adventure
After splashing around in the waves, we trudged back to the truck with our soggy bottoms and sandy shoes. Our next stop wasn’t dinner or the hotel—it was a car wash. We needed to rinse every bit of salt and sand off Sam’s beach wheelchair before it could dry and start to corrode. Nothing says “Florida adventure” quite like hosing down a wheelchair under neon lights at night.
