Golden Spike, Golden Laughs: Sam & Ryan’s Not-So-Boring Day at Promontory

Sam swears Golden Spike National Historic Park is “boring.” Ryan says, “Challenge accepted.” We rolled into Promontory Summit to settle it the only way we know how—trains, trivia, sarcasm, and a few steam blasts to the face.

The Premise

The park commemorates the completion of the transcontinental railroad—big history vibes, bigger locomotives. Sam’s been before and wasn’t impressed. This time we brought our secret weapon: bad jokes and the Extreme Motus All-Terrain Wheelchair to cruise the site comfortably and keep the adventure accessible.

What We Saw (and Heard)

  • Working steam engines (including the famous Jupiter) breathing fire and singing with LOUD whistles
  • Interpretive demos, historic re-enactment energy, and a platform-side view that makes you feel the heat
  • A running debate: Is there an actual golden spike here? (Watch our episode for the reveal.)

“Do not shoplift the golden spike.” —Us, to ourselves. (Rangers, we’re kidding. Promise.)

The Banter You Came For

  • Sam lists what he didn’t learn (which is… a lot, according to Sam)
  • Ryan drops a little Blazing Saddles wisdom because of course he does
  • We try not to get singed by steam, or shushed by history lovers

Accessibility Notes

  • We explored using the Extreme Motus All-Terrain Wheelchair, which made the visit smooth and inclusive
  • Paths, platforms, and viewing areas let us get close to the action without sacrificing comfort or safety
  • If you’re planning an adaptive visit, consider arriving a bit early—steam demos draw a crowd and the best sightlines go fast

Highlights Reel

  • Steam engine close-ups (pistons, paint, polished brass—the works)
  • Whistle moments that will wake your ancestors
  • History meets humor: a little edutainment, a lot of personality
  • Sam vs. Boredom: Can Golden Spike win him over?

Why We Go

We’re all about turning “maybe someday” into “let’s go today.” Sites like Golden Spike aren’t just for history buffs—they’re for families, friends, and anyone who loves a weirdly loud day outside with something new to see.

Plan a Visit (Quick Tips)

  • Check for steam schedule or demos on the day you go
  • Bring ear protection for little kids (and Sam, apparently)
  • Layer up—sun, wind, and steam all make an appearance
  • Leave the “shoplifting jokes” at home (…or don’t, but be nice to the rangers)

Gear Shout-Out

Extreme Motus All-Terrain Wheelchair — our ride-or-die for parks, trails, and anywhere a little extra capability means a lot more fun.
