Surviving Utah’s Largest Haunted Forest in American Fork, Utah

Haunted Forest with an all terrain wheelchair

Sometimes you plan an adventure.
Other times, the adventure hunts you down with a chainsaw.

This was the second kind of day.

Sam had never been to a haunted attraction in his life — no haunted houses, no spooky hayrides, no jump-scare mazes. So naturally, we took him to the Haunted Forest in American Fork, Utah, one of the most over-the-top, scream-filled Halloween experiences in the state.

The Haunted Forest is difficult in a regular wheelchair. So we brought Sam’s Extreme Motus all terrain wheelchair to make it from one scare scene to the next through the fields. This helped but also introduced other problems. The Extreme Motus was too wide and sometimes too long to make it through some of the tight spaces.

Luckily we had Haunted Forest employee Alex with us the whole way and he was there to show us the detours anytime we got stuck.

The goal was simple:
Get Sam through the forest without losing him, our sanity, or our pants.
(Two of those things may or may not have actually happened.)

Entering the Forest

We barely make it past the entrance before a guy with a chainsaw charges at us.

Sam: “What the heck was that?”
Me: “Welcome to Halloween, buddy.”

We try bargaining with a pumpkin-headed scarecrow to let us skip the scaring portion by offering him Sam as a “human sacrifice.”
Shockingly, this did not work.

The Creatures Begin

Every corner was a surprise:

  • A pumpkin monster with way too many teeth
  • A girl who wanted Sam to “come play forever” 👀
  • A man using crutches and a missing head
  • Something that looked like a giant alien egg sack (we did NOT pull it)

At one point, Sam stops breathing — not because of medical reasons, but because he was too scared to inhale.
We had to remind him that oxygen is, in fact, important to survival.

Unexpected Friendship

We actually got assigned a guide named Alex who gave us the single worst survival advice ever:

“Just close your eyes the whole time.”

Thanks, Alex.

Later, a woman from one of the scare scenes somehow knew Sam’s name.
Sam did not appreciate this personal touch.
I, however, absolutely did.

Helping the Haunted

In the middle of the madness, we came across someone who looked like they needed help.
Which, in this environment, meant they were definitely about to be possessed or eaten.
We approached anyway.
Because that’s who we are.
(Questionable choices, excellent intentions.)

We Joined the Scare Team

Halfway through, the staff invited us to become part of the haunt.

So naturally, we hid behind a corner and scared strangers.
If you’ve never heard Sam giggle-laugh-scream, you are missing out on a top-tier life experience.

The Chainsaw Finale

Eventually, we entered what can only be described as:

“A torture chamber full of regrets and chainsaw fumes.”

A guy revved up a chainsaw and chased us out the exit.
Sam almost died.
I almost died.
My pants did actually fall off at some point.
We lost the SD card.
We had to go back in again.

Sam was not thrilled.

Final Review

Did Sam survive?
Yes.

Will he ever emotionally recover?
Unclear.

Was it fun?
Absolutely.

Would Sam do it again?
He said no.
But we all know the answer is yes next Halloween.
