Quick answer

Your Extreme Motus all-terrain wheelchair ships fully assembled and adventure-ready. To unbox: lay the box on its side, grab the handlebars, and roll the chair out on its back. Fold the front wheel down and lock it with the two pins (they’re tethered to the frame). Install the seat bag and handlebar bag, attach the tow strap, and you’re ready for your first hike. Keep the box for at least 30 days — we offer a 30-day money-back guarantee and you’ll need it for return shipping.

Unboxing your new Motus

The Extreme Motus all-terrain wheelchair ships fully assembled in a large box and is ready for adventure the moment it arrives — but a few small setup steps will make it more comfortable and more capable on day one.

The easiest way to get the Motus out of the box is to lay the box on its side with the wheelchair on its back. From there you can grab the handlebars and roll it straight out. Fold the front wheel down, slide the two pins through to lock it, and the chair is ready for its first test ride.

Accessories — already installed before shipping

Any accessories you ordered are installed at our shop before the chair ships. The chair is genuinely ready out of the box.

Handlebar bag

The handlebar bag is great for small items you want quick access to. When I’m pushing Sam on an adventure I keep my phone, GoPro, a few snacks, and a small stack of business cards in there — we get stopped on the trail constantly and asked about the chair, so the cards are useful.

Seat bag

The bag that hangs on the back of the seat is large enough for a picnic lunch, camera gear, or a spare jacket. It’s a water-resistant roll-top, but not fully waterproof — remove it if you’re going into deep water.

Once the roll top is closed, the Velcro and a buckle strap keep your gear in place. The buckle is easy to forget — at the angle the bag sits, the buckle swings down out of sight. Make a habit of buckling it before you start moving. I’ve stepped on the dangling strap and almost tripped a few times.

To mount the seat bag, slide the plastic hooks on the bag onto the metal rods sticking out from the spine of the seat until they click. Then loop the included bungee cord around the chair’s axle and hook it to the D-ring on the back of the bag. That keeps the bag from swinging around on the trail.

Tow strap / safety leash

The tow strap that ships with every Motus is the same one you’ve seen us using in our videos. We use it on tougher hikes to share the load — making it a team effort means you’ll go safer, longer, and less worn out at the end of the day.

Don’t be afraid to flag down fellow hikers and ask for a hand. We’ve done it dozens of times. It’s a great way to make friends, and it makes the hike more memorable for the strangers who get to help out.

The strap is also a safety must-have for steep terrain and any off-roading.

The strap attaches to the chair using the loops sewn into either end — no knots required, so it’s easy to remove later.

What goes up must come down — and on the descent, the same strap doubles as a safety leash. Pull it off the front of the chair, wrap it around the handlebar stem, and slip the loop around your wrist. If the person pushing trips, the chair won’t roll away.

Spare parts

Every Extreme Motus ships with a few spare parts that have a habit of going missing.

You’ll get an extra pin and spacer ring for the rear wheels. Depending on how you transport the chair, you may need to remove the rear wheels — which means pulling out the pin and spacer that hold them on. These two pieces have a way of falling into the quantum realm the moment they’re removed, so keep the spares in your luggage.

Two pins also lock the front wheel in place. Those pins are tethered to the frame with strings so they’re hard to lose — but it has happened, so we include a spare for that too.

If you somehow lose the originals and the spares, open Google and search “Tractor Supply” — they’ll have a hitch pin that fits.

Handlebar height adjustment

The handlebar height adjusts with the included multi-tool. Take the chair on a quick test push and decide if you want it higher or lower. Loosen the Allen-head bolt underneath the stem (not the one on the side), slide it to your happy place, and tighten everything back down.

Seat position — ergonomics

As the front wheel folds into place you’ll see two different holes in the frame. This gives you the option of a more reclined seat or a more upright one. Comfort varies between riders — try both positions on the first ride and pick what works.

More reclined: more of an angle on the footrest.

More upright: footrest is flatter, seat sits taller.

Keep the box

After unboxing, hang on to the box for at least 30 days. We offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, and if the Motus isn’t everything you hoped it would be, you’ll need the original box to ship it back. Return shipping is paid by the customer.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Extreme Motus arrive assembled?
Yes. The chair ships fully assembled with all ordered accessories already installed. You’ll fold the front wheel down, lock it with the two pins, and you’re ready to roll.

How long does setup take out of the box?
Under 5 minutes for the chair itself. Add a few more minutes if you want to mount the seat bag with its bungee cord or fine-tune the handlebar height.

What tools do I need?
None. The included multi-tool covers handlebar height adjustment. Everything else is hand-tight or pin-locked.

How long should I keep the shipping box?
At least 30 days. We offer a 30-day money-back guarantee and the original box is required for return shipping.

What happens if I lose the front-wheel or rear-wheel pins?
We ship spares in the box — keep them in your luggage. If you lose those too, any Tractor Supply (or similar farm-and-ranch store) carries a compatible hitch pin.

Can I adjust the seat position later?
Yes. The two front-wheel mounting holes give you a more reclined or more upright option. You can swap between them in under a minute by removing and reinserting the front-wheel pin in the other hole.
