Quick answer: To repair a flat Wheeleez tire: (1) inflate the tire, (2) spray it with soapy water and watch for bubbles to find the puncture(s), (3) mark each hole with a permanent marker, (4) use a soldering iron to melt the puncture closed (a “thermal weld”). Wheeleez tires are made of soft urethane, so a soldering iron melts and re-fuses the material cleanly. We’ve used this exact repair on a tire that’s been on Sam’s chair since November 2020.
Wheeleez balloon tires are extremely durable, but no tire is invincible. After 2+ years of torture-testing the Extreme Motus all-terrain wheelchair across skateparks, beaches, mountain trails, and national parks, we’ve gotten exactly one flat. It happened at a mountain bike park where we were jumping the chair several feet into the air. The puncture turned into a slow leak that we found in the garage the next morning.
We repaired that tire — it’s still in service today. Here’s exactly how.
What you’ll need
- A bicycle or hand pump with a Schrader valve fitting
- Spray bottle with soapy water (a few drops of dish soap in water works)
- Permanent marker to mark the punctures
- Soldering iron (any wattage, $15–30 at any hardware store)
- Well-ventilated workspace — melted urethane fumes aren’t great to breathe

Step-by-step Wheeleez flat tire repair
1. Inflate the tire
Pump the tire to its normal operating pressure (Wheeleez balloon tires run low — around 5–7 PSI). Don’t overinflate; you just need enough air for bubbles to form at the puncture site.
2. Spray with soapy water and find every puncture
Spray the entire tire surface with the soapy water. Slowly rotate the tire and watch for bubbles forming — that’s where air is escaping. Important: there might be more than one puncture. A thorny trail or a single nail can leave multiple holes. Check the entire tread surface and the sidewalls before stopping.
3. Mark each puncture with a permanent marker
Circle every leak you find. The mark stays visible after the tire dries, so you can come back and weld each one without losing your spot.
4. “Thermal weld” each hole with the soldering iron
Plug in the soldering iron and let it heat up fully. Press the tip directly into the puncture for 2–3 seconds — the urethane will melt and re-fuse around the iron. Pull the iron away cleanly and let the spot cool for 30 seconds before testing.
Pro tip: Don’t try to “fill” the hole — you’re not adding material. The heat just re-melts the urethane on either side of the puncture so it flows back together. Light touch.
5. Re-test with soapy water
After all welds are done and the tire is cool, spray it with soapy water again and check for any remaining bubbles. If you find a leak you missed, repeat step 4 on that spot.
Why this works
Wheeleez tires are made of solid urethane (not rubber, not pneumatic in the traditional sense). The material melts cleanly at moderate temperatures and re-fuses without any patches or glue. That’s why a soldering iron works so well — you’re literally re-bonding the same material to itself.
This is the same reason these tires last 15+ years on California Coastal Commission beach wheelchairs and survive everything we’ve thrown at them on TikTok.
When the tire really can’t be repaired
If the damage is too severe — a major sidewall blowout, a deep gash longer than an inch or two, or the urethane has degraded from age — you’ll need a replacement. We carry spare Wheeleez tires and can ship one to you so you stay out exploring.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a Wheeleez tire repair last?
The thermal weld is permanent for most punctures. The tire we repaired in November 2020 is still in service today — multiple years and hundreds of miles later. As long as the surrounding urethane is healthy, the weld holds indefinitely.
Can I use a regular tire patch kit on a Wheeleez tire?
Standard rubber patches don’t bond well to urethane. The soldering-iron thermal weld is by far the most reliable repair because it uses the tire’s own material. If you don’t have a soldering iron, a tire shop with one (most have them for plastic welds) can do this in under 5 minutes.
What soldering iron temperature do I need?
Any standard soldering iron works — most run 350–450°F (175–230°C), which is plenty to melt urethane. You don’t need a fancy temperature-controlled unit; a $15 fixed-temperature iron from a hardware store does the job.
How can I prevent flat Wheeleez tires in the first place?
The good news: balloon tires resist most punctures because the low pressure lets thorns and small sharps push aside rather than pierce through. After hundreds of TikTok adventures we’ve gotten exactly one flat. To minimize risk, avoid jumping the chair onto sharp landing surfaces (mountain bike features), and rinse the tires after beach use to clear out shells or sharp debris.
How much does a replacement Wheeleez tire cost?
A replacement Wheeleez tire from us runs roughly $150–250 depending on size and configuration. We keep a small stock for fast shipment so you’re not down for long. Email or call us with your chair model for an exact quote.
