If you’re an adult looking for a chair that actually gets you outside — I mean real outside, not just the driveway — the Extreme Motus is what I’d show you first.

I’ve spent a decade with my friend Sam in this chair and a dozen others. The Motus is the one that keeps coming back. Here’s why.

What Makes It an All-Terrain Chair

Most wheelchairs are built for hallways and sidewalks. Hard tires, narrow frame, smooth pavement only. The Motus is different: it has low-pressure balloon tires (same concept as a fat-bike or beach chair) that spread your weight across sand, snow, gravel, and mud without sinking. The frame is aluminum but overbuilt — it’ll take a beating.

When I push Sam down a dirt trail, the balloon tires absorb the bumps. On pavement, it rolls smooth. On sand — this is where it shines — it glides while regular wheelchairs get stuck.

Weight and Transport

The Motus weighs 49 pounds unloaded. It folds in half, roughly 12 inches deep when folded. That fits in the trunk of a sedan — Honda Civic, Toyota Camry, any decent hatchback. You can lift it in and out without destroying your back.

This is not a small detail. A chair you can’t transport is a chair that sits in your garage. I’ve seen $15,000 chairs do exactly that.

Sizing and Customization

We make three frame sizes: Small, Medium, Large. Sizing depends on torso length and wheel positioning for control. You’ll get fitted before ordering — either in person or over video with a seating specialist.

Seat options and add-ons:

  • Seat cushion: Standard vinyl, or upgraded pressure-relief (highly recommended for all-day use).
  • Backrest height: Adjustable. Higher backrest = more trunk support. Lower = easier self-propulsion.
  • Harness/safety straps: Good idea if you’re on steep terrain or in water.
  • Headrest: +$200. Recommended if you have limited trunk control or want head support on bumpy ground.
  • Tall-rider footrest: +$200. For riders over 6 feet or with long legs.
  • Custom embroidery or powder-coat colors: +$200–$400. Takes 2–4 weeks. Fun but not essential.

How It Handles Different Terrain

Sand and Beaches

The balloon tires float on sand like a raft. We take the Motus to the beach regularly. Unlike regular wheelchairs that sink, this one glides. Riders can even go into shallow water — the tires keep it buoyant. Rinse with fresh water afterward and you’re good.

Dirt Trails and Gravel

Rocky trails, gravel roads, packed dirt — all day, no problem. The tires grip, the frame flexes slightly, the ride is bumpy but controlled. One person can push on moderate grades. Steep grades (10%+) need two pushers or a very strong rider self-propelling.

Snow

The balloon tires work beautifully in snow. You can’t go up a vertical cliff, but you can roll through powder and packed snow at a normal pace. Families love this — winter isn’t a dead season anymore.

Pavement and Sidewalks

Smooth as any daily wheelchair. No performance loss on the street.

Propulsion Options

Manual (One Caregiver Pushing)

A single strong person can push the Motus all day on flat terrain and moderate hills. This is the most common setup — parent or partner pushing an adult rider. At 49 lbs plus rider weight (say 150–250 lbs), a moderate push is realistic for fit caregivers. On steeper terrain or long distances, a second pusher helps tremendously.

Manual Self-Propelled

If you have strong upper-body strength and mobility, you can self-propel the Motus with rim-drive wheels or lever propulsion (less common, but available). You’ll move slower than on a daily chair but you maintain full control and independence. Great for riders with paraplegia or incomplete spinal cord injury.

Manual with a Team (Sherpa Hiking)

On technical trails or steeper terrain, two to four people push and help guide. Think of it as sherpa-style hiking — very rewarding, very strong sense of adventure. This is where the Motus shines for serious outdoor trips.

Price and Financing

Base price: $4,500. Shipping in the US is roughly $375. Accessories add another $0–$800 depending on what you choose.

Financing options:

  • Affirm (0% interest over 6–24 months, ~$203/month on 24-month plan)
  • Manufacturer payment plan (call us for terms)
  • HSA/FSA with Letter of Medical Necessity
  • Disability grants (Reeve Foundation, Kelly Brush, etc.)
  • VA benefits for veterans

Insurance rarely covers all-terrain chairs. Check our financing guide for the full breakdown of funding paths.

What Owners Actually Say

Adults using the Motus tell us the same things: “I can go where I want now.” “My family includes me again.” “I didn’t realize how much I was missing.” Those aren’t marketing lines — those are real people getting their lives back.

Is It Right for You?

The Motus is a great fit if you:

  • Spend time outdoors (trails, beaches, snow, parks)
  • Want to fit your chair in a car trunk
  • Have a reliable pusher or strong upper body for self-propulsion
  • Want to be included in family adventures without compromises
  • Can handle a 49-lb chair in and out of a vehicle

It’s not the right choice if you:

  • Need a powered chair for independence (solo use, long distances)
  • Live on steep terrain with no help pushing
  • Can’t lift 50 lbs in and out of a car
  • Only use paved paths and accessible locations

If you’re not sure, let’s talk. I’ll tell you straight whether it fits your life.

FAQ: All-Terrain Wheelchairs for Adults

Can an adult self-propel the Extreme Motus?

Yes, if you have sufficient upper-body strength. Self-propulsion is harder than a daily wheelchair due to the wider tires and balloon design, but it’s entirely possible for riders with paraplegia, incomplete spinal cord injury, or strong arm function. We can outfit it with rim-drive or lever-drive propulsion.

How much does it weigh with someone in it?

The chair alone is 49 lbs. Add an adult rider (average 180 lbs) and you’re at roughly 230 lbs total. One fit person can push this on flat terrain; hills or longer distances benefit from a second pusher.

Will it fit in my car?

If you have a sedan or hatchback with a trunk of 12+ cubic feet, yes. The Motus folds to about 12 inches deep. Measure your trunk or ask — we have a checklist. Most sedans, minivans, and all SUVs will take it.

What’s the difference between the Motus and other all-terrain chairs?

The Motus is lightweight (49 lbs), folds for car transport, floats in water, and costs $4,500. It’s manual-only (no motor). Competitors like the GRIT Freedom Chair ($2,995–$5,495) are self-propel-focused and heavier. Powered all-terrain chairs (Magic Mobility, TrackChair) start at $8,000+ and don’t fit in trunks. See our buyer’s guide for a full comparison.

Can adults use the same frame as children?

No. We make three frame sizes (S/M/L) based on torso length and rider weight. Adults typically use Medium or Large. Children use Small or Medium depending on size. You’ll be fitted to the right size before ordering.

How often do I need to service it?

The Motus is low-maintenance. Check tire pressure monthly, rinse after beach or mud use, and grease the wheel hubs every 6 months. No batteries, no complex systems. Most repairs (tire replacement, bearing service) can be done by a good bike shop or by us.
