Extreme Motus Stories: Kevin & Jacque (Hawaii to Zion)

Quick answer

Kevin and his mom Jacque bought their Extreme Motus all-terrain wheelchair in 2021 and have used it to hike everywhere from Hawaii’s Na Pali coast to Zion National Park. Kevin was born with spina bifida, and the Motus’s 49-lb manual frame and Wheeleez balloon tires let his family roll onto trails and beaches that a standard chair can’t touch. This is one of our favorite customer stories — proof that the right equipment turns “we can’t do that as a family” into “where to next?”

In this episode of Extreme Motus Stories, Sam and I sat down with Kevin and his mom Jacque to talk about life with their Motus — what they’ve done with it over the past four years, where they’re headed next, and what they wish they’d known when they were shopping for an all-terrain wheelchair.

Meet Kevin and Jacque

Kevin was born with spina bifida, a congenital condition that occurs when the spine and spinal cord don’t form properly during pregnancy. About 1,500 to 2,000 babies in the U.S. are born with it each year. The way it affects mobility varies a lot from person to person — for Kevin, it means he uses a wheelchair full-time.

Jacque, his mom, has been the constant in Kevin’s outdoor life. She’s the one researching trails, packing the truck, and pushing the Motus when the grade gets steep. The two of them have built a real adventure rhythm together, and they document a lot of it on Instagram.

Why they chose the Extreme Motus

When Kevin and Jacque started looking at all-terrain wheelchairs back in 2021, they ran into the same wall most families do: the powered options (Action Trackchair, TerrainHopper) cost $15,000+ and weigh several hundred pounds, which makes travel almost impossible. They wanted something they could throw in the truck and take to Hawaii, not a chair that needs its own trailer.

The Extreme Motus fit because:

  • It’s manual. 49 lbs, no batteries to worry about on a plane or in the backcountry.
  • It’s transportable. Fits in a car trunk or under an aircraft cargo hold.
  • It’s affordable. $4,500 standard versus $15,000+ for powered alternatives.
  • The tires actually work. Wheeleez balloon tires float across sand, snow, and mud — the same family of tires used on commercial beach carts.

Where the Motus has taken them

In four years, Kevin and Jacque have used the Motus across a wild range of terrain. Highlights include:

  • Zion National Park — the Pa’rus Trail is fully paved and scenic; sections of the Riverside Walk also work for an all-terrain chair.
  • Hawaii — beaches, coastal trails, and overlooks that aren’t on any “accessible” list but absolutely should be.
  • State and county parks closer to home — the kind of weekend trips that get skipped when the chair won’t work.

What stands out talking to them isn’t any one big trip — it’s how casually they talk about going places. The chair has stopped being a question. They just go.

FAQ: Customer stories and the Extreme Motus

What is the Extreme Motus all-terrain wheelchair?

It’s a 49-lb manual all-terrain wheelchair built for sand, snow, gravel, water, and trails. The frame is CNC-machined aluminum, the tires are Wheeleez polyurethane balloon tires, and it has hydraulic disc brakes. Standard configuration is $4,500. Customizations (different seat, drink holder, custom paint) are available.

Can someone with spina bifida use an all-terrain wheelchair?

Yes — and many of our customers do. Spina bifida affects mobility differently for everyone, but the Motus is designed to work for full-time wheelchair users with a wide range of trunk control and upper-body strength. Most people use it with a caregiver pushing on rougher terrain, but plenty of users self-propel on flat ground.

Can I take an all-terrain wheelchair on a plane?

Yes. The Motus is one of the only all-terrain chairs light enough and compact enough to fly with. At 49 lbs, it goes in the cargo hold like any other manual wheelchair. Customers fly it to Hawaii, Alaska, Europe — wherever they want to go.

How much does an all-terrain wheelchair cost in 2026?

It depends a lot on whether you go manual or powered. Manual all-terrain chairs run roughly $2,500–$8,000 (the Motus is $4,500). Powered options like the Action Trackchair, TerrainHopper, or Magic Mobility X8 start around $15,000 and easily reach $30,000+. Where can I read more Extreme Motus customer stories?

We’ve published a growing collection — including Robbie’s family at Accessible Adventures (30+ national parks visited), Henry & Jane Evans, and Scott’s mods. Every customer uses the chair a little differently, so reading a few stories is the best way to see whether the Motus would fit your life.

Have a story to share?

If you own a Motus and want to be featured in an upcoming Extreme Motus Stories video, just send me an email. We love sharing what our customers are doing with the chair — it inspires the next family who’s trying to figure out whether all-terrain wheelchairs are real or marketing.
